I just finished putting up my weekly list of wild flower still in bloom. See my Wild Flower web site if you are interested in what can bloom even after several frosts and a snow cover.
Below are two items I found while I walked the dog at noon today. The first is a mushroom gowing on the ground in a very damp area. Sorry, I don't know what species it is and as it was by itself, I did not pick it to check out the spore colours.
Next is the skeleton of a Wild Cucumber (Echinocystis lobata).

Wow, that wild cucumber skeleton is amazing! Whatever do they look like when they are not skeletal? It doesn't seem very similar to the sort of cucumber I put in my sandwiches ...
I agree--the cucumber is a great picture.
The mushroom looks poisonous and I wouldn't even want to touch it!
The cucumber skeleton looks rather like a luffa sponge.
SGJ, I am looking for a photo of a green Wild Cucumber. (When did we manage to get almost 18000 mostly unlabelled digital photos? Sigh!) It might take a moment or two. I don't know why it got the Wild Cucumber name as it really does not look too much like a cucumber and it's not good to eat.
LK, Thanks!
TB, I don't think the mushroom is poisonous to touch. Perhaps I can gather some spores without picking it. I'll have to think about a method. I don't know the luffa sponge....
Definite consensus on that wild cucumber skeleton. So beautiful.
I may not get to visit yer blog tomorrow since I'll be traveling, so I want to wish you and yours a wonderful holiday now.
Here's a photo of a luffa sponge. I wonder if a wild cucumber skeleton could be used as a bath sponge?
