Mystery Plant - Big Bluestem - Sit Spot #926 - August 10, 2021

I  found this short composite flower

beside one of our walking trails.

It has me puzzled.

Because it is right next to a mowed path,

it may have been mowed earlier in the season

but it is now blooming and only about 30 cm tall.

Any ideas?
