I started my day with my usual volunteering at the Royal Botanical Gardens then went out looking for blooming plants. The same three plants that I have seen since January were still blooming. Two species of Witch Hazel that are planted in the RBG Woodland Garden are still blooming and the Common Chickweed that I found near an evergreen tree continues to bloom whenever I can find it. I went down into the valley to look for Skunk Cabbage. I got into snow up over my knees and decided that today was not a Skunk Cabbage day but then I heard the sound of the first Red-winged Blackbirds of the season. Spring is on the way!
On the way back home, I glanced over the Hamilton Harbour, which was frozen over, and saw, for the first time in several years, iceboats! I managed to get a few photos with my camera in spite of them being very far out on the ice.

RBG and Red Winged Black Birds immediately conjure images of home. Next, you'll be seeing Robins and then you will know it is summer! There are few more wonderful places to pass a day than the Royal Botanical Gardens.
Well, that's the first time I ever saw or heard of an ice boat!
The Robins were not far behind. In spite of the snow, the Robins were hopping about and chirping in the Sumacs on Saturday.
Hey Rachel, I had never seen or heard about ice boats until I came to Ontario. I've only seen them on a few rare winter days.
