When I was wandering by the Hamilton harbour at the end of Lake Ontario yesterday, I saw this Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias).
Back when I was a "Kansas Wanderer," I used to live near a colony of herons that nested in sycamore trees. I have no idea where this heron nests.

We often see herons near our home in SW Ont too, but almost always surrounded by brown water and/or barren stones.
This is very cool b/c I live in downtown Toronto, where the only animals are the ones that drank too much at the bars.
Lovely photo. There are Grey Herons on the river close to where I live. I love to watch them fly - those great, slow, steady wingbeats.
We have Blue Herons up here on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. We often see them on the shore of Port Townsend Bay, or standing in the brackish water of the marsh close by. We have a small (maybe 12 feet long and 10 feet wide) pond in our yard that we filled with a dozen feeder goldfish last year. In late fall we noticed a blue heron stalking on the side of our pond, not 50 feet from our living room window. It made several trips to our little snack bar, until only one of the original goldfish was left.
The Hamilton harbour is one of the more polluted bodies of water in Canada but a good reflected sky does improve its appearance
Have a look around Karen, I have seen Great Blue Herons in several of the Toronto ravines as well as in High Park.
Grey Herons and Blue Herons both share that slow, steady wingbeat. I enjoy watching the herons both in water and in the air.
Yes, the herons do enjoy restaurants.
