From Small to Tall

Here are some fungi that we found under a tree on our property.

Here is a White Pine tree that is growing on the grounds of the Glenhyrst Art Gallery in Brantford.

Not far from the fungi was a milkweed pod that had lost all of its seeds. Inside the pod it looked like this:

Here is another view of the pines at Glenhyrst.

November 12 Views

We had an amazing November 12 day yesterday. It was much warmer than a usual November day and sunny for an additional treat. While out walking Églantine photographed a fungus and strawberry leaf.

At long last, I got around to digging the rest of the potatoes out of the garden.

I planted three short rows of potatoes in the spring, hoed them about once during the summer and in general ignored them and let them be surrounded by weeds and still I dug up over 34 kg (75 lbs) of potatoes. That does not count the potatoes that we have been digging since late August for the occasional meal.

While I was digging potatoes, Églantine was taking photos including this great one of a Chickadee on one of our Sunflower plants!

While supper was cooking I looked outside and noticed the late afternoon sun lighting up one of our tall garden grasses.

The sun was setting so I walked to the edge of the yard and got this photo.

And with the wide angle lens of the camera, this is what I saw.

Not being one to leave something beautiful alone, I played with the image with Photoshop and got this result.

Dundas Marsh Colour

Cold winds and rain have taken most of the leaves off the trees on our property but a few kilometres down the road next to Lake Ontario is the Dundas marsh area known as Cootes Paradise. Because it is below the Niagara Escarpment and next to Lake Ontario, the weather is moderated. There are still trees with fall colours there.

Next to the water there are still flowers in bloom.

Here is a closer look at the Nodding Bur-Marigold (Bidens cernua)

And last, but not least, here is an attempt to photograph a very bright, shiny, unidentified fly that is on the Lance-leaved (sometimes called Grass-leaved) Goldenrod (Euthamia graminifolia).

Hawks and Flowers

The sunrise was not too exciting this morning but when I was walking the dog I saw this hawk in a nearby tree.

Here it is a bit closer. I am thinking it is a 1st year Light juvenile Red-tailed Hawk.

I tried to get closer by walking slowly and not looking up at it but when I did look, it was gone. Guess I got up too late to fool it. Oh well, I did find a neat Sow Thistle later when looking down.

Sunrise Series cont.

I am enjoying the sunrises lately. Until I hear complaints, I shall probably keep taking photos and keep posting them if I think they are worthy. So, here is sunrise, Nov. 10th.

And, just so you have something else to look at, here is a close up of an aster seed collection.

And here is what I was going to put up yesterday but ran out of time. It's the best shot I've had of one of the many deer that are often on our property just before the dog and I arrive.
