walking
quietly
alert for traffic
mailboxes
barns
roadside art
then suddenly
from the far side of the road
a black & white protector
lunges, leaps, explodes,
charges toward me
ignoring traffic
traffic does not like being ignored
it attacks
again suddenly
too fast for thinking
actions happen
squealing brakes
thud of impact
high pitched yelps
excrement spewing in circles
truck lights flash
cars stop
the would-be protector
spins to the side
and off the road
trying to bite away the pain
not dead but broken
it is picked up
moved to the car
that was
minutes before
going to a favourite walk spot
but now
to a vet
leaving
innocent walker
distraught car driver
grieving owner
all awash in tears
