Walking the Beam

Walking the Beam
Originally uploaded by Ontario Wanderer

I put in a balance beam for our goats. Alice is enjoying showing off on it. Initially they just looked at it and licked it but I demonstrated by getting up and walking back and forth on the beam and then Alice, the younger goat, followed my example. I have not seen Gertrude on the beam yet but I am sure she will be up on it sooner or later as both like to climb up on things in the barnyard.

St. Patrick's Day sunrise: the camera just could not do the scene justice. Hard to capture the accompanying bird songs.

Leroy

Here is our donkey, Leroy, enjoying the almost spring sunshine while waiting for his pedicure. The farrier came in the early afternoon.

Leroy has a wonderful winter coat right now that will soon begin to fall off and then we will have a motley, varicoloured donkey for a couple of months.

Sapcicle

I found this "sapsicle" on the trunk of a white pine that was cut last fall. The colour and the smoothness and the unexpected place all attracted me. The log was at the side of one of the trails at the Royal Botanical Garden's Arboretum in Hamilton.

Fog Runners

Fog Runners

Lead runners in the Brantford to Ancaster long training run on March 7. Getting ready for the Bay Race around the Hamilton Harbour at the end of the month. This run was about 26 km in cool temperatures, heavy cloud cover, and fog most of the way. Not bad for running weather.

Almost . . .

Almost . . .

Winter Aconite (Eranthus hyemalis) is almost in bloom in Hamilton. It's not even out of the ground at our place near Brantford. It may have been blooming by the end of the day but I was looking at it at noon today.
Meanwhile, the Red-winged Blackbirds arrived today at our place and the American Robins were singing too. I wonder when the next snow will arrive.

Chilly Half Marathon - March 1, 2009

Chilly Half Marathon - March 1, 2009

It was a chilly day. The wind chill temperatures ranged from - 11 to -14 with the wind from the north. The saving grace was that the sun was out and almost all of the ice and snow was off the streets so it was dry pavement running 99.9% of the way.
