Around our Property

It appears that sunrise is the best time for photos lately.

Below is a photo of Gray Dogwood (Cornus racemosa). It is also called Panicled Dogwood for obvious reasons. In addition to reproducing by the berries, it also spreads by sending out roots with new growth coming up around the centre core. Often the Gray Dogwood will look like a mound of growth with the oldest part at the centre and newer sprouts coming up around the edges. (Yes, I used Photoshop to gray out everything that was not Dogwood.)

I am always intrigued by flowers that bloom in spite of the leaves on the plant turning brown. These flowers are on a Canada Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis}.

Very nice, OW.
Do you use a filter when you shoot directly into the sun? I'm a novice photographer and have never used filters. When I try to photograph (with the digital) even close to the sun, it burns out everything else.

RD, No, I don't have a filter. I'm not sure exactly what I did to get the photo but I am sure that I did not let the focus centre on the sun. Given the low light and the focus somewhere off to the side of the sun, I still got a very dark photo with the bright sun. I then used Photoshop to add just enough light to see a bit of the areas around the sun. Does that help?

PS The line that Wyrd in English Watchman used was from Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" which is my favourite poem of all time. It was in "Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There." Look at the URL below for a copy.
